KDH: Military Operation in Venezuela Example of Great Power Politics

Bratislava, 4 January (TASR) - The US military operation against Venezuela is an example of great power politics, which the opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) considers to be obsolete since the fall of the Berlin Wall, TASR has learnt from KDH's communications department on Sunday.
For KDH, adherence to international law and conventions is fundamental to protecting the security of the Slovak people and the country's territorial integrity.
"We are convinced that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is not recognised by the European Union, and his associates should be brought before the International Criminal Court," stated KDH, adding that Maduro's regime has long been using the criminal practices of Russia and Belarus as its allies, turning drug trafficking and illegal migration into a strategic weapon against the United States. Illegal smuggling of drugs has grown to such an extent that it has begun to undermine the security not only of the USA but also of some European countries, especially France, according to KDH.
However, the arrest of the Venezuelan president should have been carried out in accordance with international law. "It's also necessary to recall that the unrecognised President Maduro has been urged several times by the USA to address the situation, but he ignored it," stated KDH.
In the European Parliament, KDH will push for the EU to clearly communicate the requirement that the United States refrain from further interference in Venezuela. Also, according to KDH, comparing the US operation in Venezuela with the long-term Russian aggression in Ukraine doesn't hold up. "Unlike Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the US attack does not involve annexation or separation of any part of Venezuelan territory," stated KDH's communications department.
The Venezuelan president and his wife were captured by US special forces during an operation on Saturday (3 January), ordered by US President Donald Trump following the U.S. military build-up in the Caribbean since the summer of 2025, involving an aircraft carrier, warships and modern fighter jets.
