Bratislava, 1 January (TASR) - In the new year, I wish Slovakia peace, prosperity and a government that puts people first, as well as families and jobs, stated Christian Democrat Movement (KDH) chairman Milan Majersky in his New Year address. "We want a government that creates conditions that make it worthwhile for people to work at home [in Slovakia], that gives them good salaries for honest work and security for their future. We want a Slovakia that works, provides quality services and helps to reduce the cost of living, not increase it. We want peace at home and in the world, for weapons to fall silent, for us as a society to listen more and lecture less, simply to seek common solutions," he said. On the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the founding of the independent Slovakia, MP and chairwoman of the 'For the People' party Veronika Remisova said that the country is facing the decline of the state and the weakening of independent institutions. "Not a week goes by without the public being confronted with some huge corruption scandal. At the same time, Slovakia continues to face strong pressure from criminal groups that are using political power to destroy the rule of law and independent institutions," she added. Remisova also pointed to the deteriorating security situation and rising living costs. According to her, people are exposed to endless price increases and higher tax burdens, while the public funds collected aren't being used for measures that would improve the state of public finances. The 'For the People' chair also criticised the current government's foreign policy, which she believes is damaging Slovakia's international reputation. In this context, she called on people to support the protection of democracy, the rule of law and the country's economic stability in the upcoming elections. "This year, Slovakia will hold municipal elections in which people will be able to reject the chaos, corruption and economic decline caused by the parties of the current governing coalition and instead choose the path of law and prosperity," she stated. am/df
