Bratislava, 1 January 1 (TASR) - Let's take an interest in what's happening in our villages, towns and regions, and let's make decisions based on results, not promises, said President Peter Pellegrini in his New Year address in connection with this year's elections to municipal and regional self-government bodies. "Slovakia is a democratic country in which the citizens decide the fate of politicians in elections. In the autumn, we'll elect our mayors and regional governors. Let's not miss this opportunity. Instead, let's take an interest in what's happening in our municipalities, towns and regions, and let's make decisions based on results, not promises," he stated. Pellegrini pointed out that the ability to vote is the most powerful weapon that people have in a democratic country. "Suddenly, every politician is powerless against it and must humbly accept the decisions of the public," he stated, adding that people have every opportunity to put pressure on politicians to behave responsibly, decently, and to keep the promises they have made. According to the head of state, they also have the power to reject the vulgarities and mutual recriminations that many politicians offer them. "And to make it clear that they want a different kind of politics - a politics of reconciliation, cohesion and peace," he said. am/df
