Michelko: We Want to Amend NGO Legislation to Comply with Court's Objections

Bratislava, 18 December (TASR) - The coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) will study the reasoning behind the Constitutional Court's verdict that the amendment to the law on non-profit organisations providing generally beneficial services is unconstitutional, head of the SNS parliamentary caucus Roman Michelko told TASR on Thursday, adding that the legislation will probably be amended so that it will comply with the Constitution. "We'll study the reasoning. The model is such that we have 60 days to make changes in the sense that we have to amend those parts of the law that are unconstitutional. If we fail to do so, they will cease to be valid, so we will, of course, study it and probably amend it to make it constitutionally compliant," Michelko told TASR. The procedure will be discussed within the coalition. The law amending legislation on NGOs providing generally beneficial services is internally contradictory and therefore inappropriate, the Constitutional Court has stated in connection with Wednesday's (17 December) decision that the amendment contradicts constitutional articles concerning fundamental human rights and freedoms, as well as political rights. It found that the disclosure of information about contributors and the amounts of their contributions disproportionately interferes with their right to privacy. am/df
