Bratislava, 18 November (TASR) - The Prosecutor-General's (PG) Office said on Tuesday that it won't comment on statements and calls by politicians regarding open criminal cases that are at the stage of criminal proceedings.
This was the PG Office's reaction to a call by Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) to reopen the investigation into the 2018 murders of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova, the PG's Office's spokesperson Zuzana Drobova told TASR.
In a speech that he delivered at a party event titled '17 November – A Day of Respect for Different Opinions' at the Agrokomplex venue in Nitra on Monday (17 November), Fico called on Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok (Voice-SD) and PG Maros Zilinka to revisit, in light of new circumstances that have emerged on the international stage, what happened in 2018.
The case of the murder of investigative journalist Kuciak is scheduled to resume at the Specialised Criminal Court (STS) in Pezinok (Bratislava region) on 26 January, 2026, Peter Kubina, a lawyer representing the Kuciak family has confirmed for TASR, adding that 43 hearing dates have currently been set.
In May 2023, the STS senate acquitted Marian K. of charges of ordering Kuciak's murder, in which his fiancée also died. The Supreme Court later overturned the verdict and returned it to STS due to flaws in the contested verdict. At the same time, a different STS senate should decide on the case.
Three verdicts issued in the case are final. The men who carried out the murders, Miroslav Marcek and Tomas Szabo, were previously given 25-year prison sentences, while Zoltan Andrusko was sent to prison for 15 years.
