Bratislava, 17 November (TASR) - The Velvet Revolution was only possible thanks to the determination of the people and the unity of all democratic forces, stated ex-president Zuzana Caputova on the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, wishing Slovakia the courage and perseverance to build on what is common.
"Today's 17 November is different, and not just because it's no longer a day off. The last few days have reminded us of various forms of freedom, including the freedom to leave a situation that we disagree with, as well as the freedom not to be afraid. Too much pressure, unfairness, slander and attacks has accumulated from those who now preach respect and decency. We each have a powerful voice. And today we are calling for fairness, professionalism, to avoid questioning our membership in the communities that help us prosper and be safe, to avoid questioning 17 November. We're calling for normality," Caputova has posted on a social network.
The ex-president pointed out that the Velvet Revolution was only viable thanks to the determination of the people and the union of all democratic forces. "There are moments in the development of a country when the common good needs to be elevated to a higher level. And now it's about the protection of democracy. I wish Slovakia the courage and perseverance to build on what is common," she added.
