'Slovakia' Party Stresses Need for United Opposition, Invites PS to Its Rallies

Bratislava, 17 November (TASR) - The opposition 'Slovakia' party believes that the opposition should be united at the 17 November rallies, pointing out that several parties have accepted its invitation to the protests that it's organising, but the Progressive Slovakia (PS) party hasn't responded, according to a stance provided to TASR on Monday by party spokesman Matus Bystriansky. 'Slovakia' has called on PS to put aside its pride and have its representatives speak at the rallies. "People want to see a united opposition today. The government of Robert Fico (Smer-SD) is shamelessly dismantling the rule of law, suppressing freedom and ruthlessly making people tighten their belts every day, while granting itself double and lifetime salaries. People who live and work in Slovakia and believe in the country's future need to see one clear signal - that the parties of the democratic opposition know how to overcome their own shadows and are able to unite at a key moment," stated 'Slovakia'. 'Slovakia' once again invited PS to the protests that it's organising, calling on it to set aside its pride and personal animosities and stop putting its own ego above the fate of the country. "Our duty is not to play party games, but to defend the people whose justice, rights and freedom Fico is seeking to snatch away," added the party. MP and 'For the People' party leader Veronika Remisova also declared that democratic forces must unite in the fight for the rule of law on the occasion of the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy. "We are once again marking our big holiday of democracy in the shadow of the extreme pressure put by the government on the rule of law, civil society and independent media ... There is only one meaningful response to the moral, economic and security decay caused by this government: united democratic forces and joint pressure to defend justice, legality and freedom," stated Remisova. ko/df
