Bratislava, 14 November (TASR) - Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air opened its own base at M.R. Stefanik Airport in Bratislava on Friday, airport spokeswoman Veronika Demovicova told TASR on the same day, adding that it will gradually deploy four of the latest 239-seat Airbus A321neo aircraft and will operate a total of 27 direct flights from Bratislava.
The new base will also bring new flight connections from Bratislava airport. On Friday, the first passengers will fly with Wizz Air to Barcelona and to Lamezia Terme in Italy. On Saturday (15 November), new routes to the Bulgarian cities of Plovdiv and Varna will be launched, while next week new flights to Malaga will be added. Two weeks ago, a new route Bucharest was also opened, noted the spokeswoman.
Wizz Air will operate new direct flights to Barcelona from Bratislava every day, seven times a week. In just one week, on 21 November, Wizz Air will also launch a daily domestic route from Bratislava to Kosice. The carrier currently operates regular flights to Skopje and London-Luton," said Demovicova.
The spokeswoman further announced that in mid-December, the Hungarian carrier will begin flying from Bratislava to Athens and Oslo. It will also add flights to Alicante, Basel, Palermo, Naples and Nis in Serbia.
"As of the beginning of 2026, the carrier will expand its Bratislava base with two additional aircraft, bringing the total to four. This will enable the launch of new routes from Bratislava, bringing the total number to 27 - the highest number of regular routes ever operated by any airline from Bratislava airport," added the spokesperson.
"Today is an important day for Bratislava airport. We're very pleased that we've managed to agree on such a historic expansion with the carrier, which will bring four Wizz Air aircraft and the launch of many new flight connections. We're thoroughly preparing to provide flight operations and would like to thank our long-term partner Wizz Air for developing its network of flight connections for Slovak passengers," said head of M.R. Stefanik Airport Dusan Novota.
"Today is an important milestone for Wizz Air in Slovakia. With the opening of our new base, we aren't only expanding our operations in Bratislava, but also beginning a new phase of operations in the country. The base will enable us to provide passengers with even more efficient services - offering more destinations, better flight times, and low ticket prices. Bratislava has proven to be a dynamic and open market, and we're very pleased to be able to contribute to its further growth," added CEO of Wizz Air Hungary Roland Tischner.
