Bratislava, 10 November (TASR) - The Transport Ministry and the relevant transport authorities on Wednesday (12 November) will present a proposal for compensating those injured in the train collisions that took place near Pezinok on Sunday (November 9) and near Roznava (Kosice region) in mid-October, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) announced on Monday after an extraordinary session of the government.
"Unfortunately, those who suffered injuries and are, in some cases, still fighting for their health have found themselves in difficulties through no fault of their own, but due to someone else's mistake," said Fico. Although the investigation into Sunday's train collision is ongoing, he said that "there are facts indicating human error".
He also pointed to statements made earlier by state-run rail infrastructure operator ZSR general director Ivan Bednarik, who stated that the driver of the regional train ignored a red signal and moved forward into the path of the express train, whose driver couldn't prevent the collision.
"A similar human error occurred in the previous case as well, which is why the Slovak government has the duty to respond to these incidents in which many people have suffered injuries through no fault of their own," said Fico.
He also asked the Transport Ministry to present a set of preventive measures to improve safety within three weeks.
"This is a matter requiring huge financial amounts, and I'll be waiting for the minister's proposal, especially as regards speeding up the process of installing safety systems on trains," stated Fico.
He also praised all the responders for their professional and smooth engagement and advised against commenting on the situation until the investigation into the case is concluded.
