ZMOS: Tragic Events in Cernova Reminder of People's Courage and Sacrifice

Ruzomberok, 27 October (TASR) - The tragic events in Cernova, a borough of the town of Ruzomberok in Zilina region, are a lasting reminder of the courage and sacrifice of ordinary people who stood up for their convictions, beliefs and the right to their own identity, chairman of the Slovak Towns and Villages Association (ZMOS) Jozef Bozik stated on Monday, commemorating the 118th anniversary of a tragedy that took place in 1907. Bozik added that their legacy is still relevant today, as it calls for respect, understanding and civic courage. "On behalf of ZMOS, we express our respect for all the victims of the Cernova tragedy and commemorate their memory as a symbol of the unity and dignity of Slovak people. Let's not forget that the history of Cernova teaches us that the strength of a community and the determination of individuals can shape the future of our nation," said Bozik. The ZMOS head added that towns and villages stand by the values that grew out of Cernova, in justice, respect, cooperation and rejection of hatred and polarisation. The Cernova tragedy, often referred to as a massacre, took place on 27 October 1907 when locals tried to prevent the consecration of a newly built church by a Hungarian priest. The police opened fire on the protesting crowd, killing 15 and leaving another 52 injured. am/df
