Brezova pod Bradlom, 24 October (TASR) - Slovakia is a peaceful country and will promote peaceful solutions at all levels, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD) told TASR after he and mayor of the town of Brezova pod Bradlom (Trencin region) Jaroslav Ciran unveiled a plaque to Jan Papanek, co-author of the Charter of the United Nations (UN), on General M.R. Stefanik Square on Friday. The ceremony was held on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the setting up of the UN. Blanar added that one of Papanek's legacies was to respect the UN Charter. He stressed the importance of preventing any war conflicts in the world and respect between countries. "This is much more relevant today, just when we're witnessing many war conflicts, it's necessary to go back to respect for international law," he stated. According to the minister, Slovakia's strongest weapon is the observance of international law. "We may be members of I don't know what alliances, but if international law isn't respected, not a single nation in this world is protected," he added. After the ceremony, a presentation on the life and work of Jan Papanek took place in the Stefanik National House. "At the time of the Second World War, he served in the resistance of the United States of America as consul in Pittsburgh and was commissioned as a representative of Czechoslovakia in forming and setting up the United Nations," Matus Valihora, the director of the Dusan Samuel Jurkovic Museum in Brezova pod Bradlom, told TASR. am
