Bratislava, 24 October (TASR) - If the state is to bear all the costs associated with the negative impacts of gambling, it must have control over gambling so that it can minimise its negative impacts on society, Tourism and Sport Minister Rudolf Huliak (Independent) said on Friday after the amendment to the Gambling Act was approved on Thursday (23 October).
The amendment allows national lottery company Tipos to take over valid licences from existing casino operators and also to do business abroad.
"My aim is to bring gambling under full state control, as well as the revenue it generates, and to combat illegal operations," said the minister, pointing out that municipalities are not losing any powers. They are still left with the option to block the renewal of the license for a brick-and-mortar casino. This is because the municipality's approval will be needed to extend the licence. At the same time, Tipos will co-finance measures to prevent and combat gambling addiction with a minimum of €500,000 per year.
According to the ministry, Tipos' aim is to bring the ending casinos under its control and prevent various financial groups from gaining a monopoly on casinos and impoverishing families through irresponsible gambling.
