Bratislava, 21 October (TASR)- Some 575 bridges should be reconstructed in Slovakia via PPP (public-private partnership) projects, with the reconstruction work taking some five years, followed by 30 years of maintenance, according to a study whose results were presented by Transport Minister Jozef Raz (a Smer-SD nominee) at a press conference on Tuesday. Raz views the renovation of bridges as a significant development impetus for the domestic economy. "The solution that we've offered combines the strengths of the private and public sectors, but most importantly, it creates a positive multiplier effect on the Slovak economy, as it attracts private money that is invested in public infrastructure," said Raz. "We've said that the optimistic scenario is somewhere around 800, while the pessimistic one was 150 bridges. A study has shown the reconstruction of 575 bridges as feasible," he said. According to the minister, the final number of reconstructed bridges will depend on the tender. The number of 575 could rise or fall by some 10 percent. In this connection, Raz pointed out that the list of bridges is not yet final and may change as a result of the public tender. The tender should be international, announced via the European Journal. The minister said that the annual payment has been calculated at €86.3 million. However, he hopes that the final sum that comes out of the tender will be lower than that. The documents concerning the reconstruction of the bridges should now be submitted to the government for approval. Around 74 percent of bridges in Slovakia are more than 40 years old at the moment. As many as 49 percent of bridges on Slovak territory are in a bad condition. If repairs aren't made, 339 bridges could fall into a critical condition by 2040. ko/df
