Bratislava, 16 October (TASR) - Wizz Air will gradually start flying to 12 new destinations from Bratislava airport, such as Tel Aviv, Dortmund and Larnaca in Cyprus, the airline's chief executive officer Jozsef Varadi told a news conference on Thursday, adding that after years of balancing between Vienna and Bratislava, the company has definitively decided to strengthen its presence in Bratislava.
In addition to a regular route to Kosice, which should be introduced as of 21 November, Wizz Air plans to launch routes to Larnaca and Chisinau (Moldova) as of January, to be followed by flights to Rome, Tirana, Ohrid (North Macedonia), Pristina, Berlin, Dortmund, Tel Aviv, Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Warsaw as of March.
Airport director Dusan Novota described these changes as some of the most significant in the history of Bratislava airport. The number of passengers, which should reach some 2.3 million this year, should thus more than double in the next few years. "The arrival of a major player like Wizz Air is key for us as Bratislava airport," he stated.
Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has admitted a need to begin a debate on a significant expansion of the airport's capacity in this context.
