Bratislava, 20 September (TASR) - The first doses of the Comirnaty vaccine for the new and currently most widespread COVID-19 variant have been delivered to Slovakia, with vaccination to begin from 22 September at 16 hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country, Health Ministry's spokesperson Veronika Danicova told TASR on Saturday. Those who are interested in receiving the new vaccine can register online with the National Health Information Centre (NCZI), and appointments will be allocated based on available capacities. "The new version of the Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine, adapted to the currently most widespread variant of the virus (LP.8.1), has been authorised for use in the European Union. As recommended by European experts, COVID-19 vaccines for the 2025/2026 season should be adapted to target the new LP.8.1 variant," the ministry explained, adding that the new vaccine is expected to help maintain strong protection against the disease. According to the ministry, the decision is based on available scientific evidence about the spread of the virus, as well as immune response. Health Minister Kamil Sasko (Voice-SD) has stated on several occasions that all those who want to get vaccinated will be able to do so. jrg
