Bratislava, 20 September (TASR) - The Nuclear and Decommissioning Company (JAVYS) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have decided to continue operating their Collaboration Centre in the years 2025–2029, building on successful cooperation in the 2021–2025 period when JAVYS actively contributed towards developing professional capacities in nuclear decommissioning, as well as radioactive waste and spent fuel management, TASR reported earlier this week based on information from JAVYS communications manager Peter Podstupka. "The extended operation of the JAVYS-IAEA Collaboration Centre is proof that our company has built a strong position within the international community, thus confirming both the expertise of our staff and the high level of technologies and processes that we apply in decommissioning and managing the nuclear 'legacy' in Slovakia," said Peter Gerhart, chairman of the JAVYS Board of Directors. According to JAVYS general director Miroslav Obert, this cooperation also entails "significant benefits for our country, from reinforcing professional capacities to enhancing Slovakia’s credibility at the global level". Podstupka said that the agreement was officially signed on 16 September at IAEA headquarters in Vienna during the 69th IAEA General Conference, with the ceremony attended by senior representatives of JAVYS, the IAEA, the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, as well as other prominent figures of the domestic and international nuclear community. Between 2025 and 2029, the Collaboration Centre will focus on professional seminars and workshops, stays by foreign experts, contributions to international databases, and thematic presentations with the aim of strengthening exchanges of know-how and support for training specialists, while at the same time enhancing Slovakia's international credibility in the nuclear energy and decommissioning sector. As a state-owned company responsible for decommissioning nuclear facilities and for the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, JAVYS implements key projects at the back-end of nuclear energy, with an emphasis on nuclear safety, environmental standards and sustainable development. jrg/df
