Bratislava, 2 September (TASR) - In the second quarter of 2025, the number of unemployed people increased slightly year-on-year (y-o-y) to 144,500, with the unemployment rate reaching 5.3 percent, the Statistics Office reported on Tuesday, adding that both indicators remained close to record lows.
The current number of jobless people for the second quarter was the second lowest since the beginning of 2021, with the historically lowest number recorded in the second quarter of 2024 (seasonally unadjusted). The unemployment rate in terms of the proportion of unemployed among the economically active population has been below the 6 percent mark for two years.
Less than two thirds of unemployed people, or 62 percent, had been out of work for more than a year, with their number slightly falling to 90,100. Accounting for nearly one third of all unemployed, the number of those who have never worked has reached 45,000, down by more than 10 percent y-o-y, with more than half of them under the age of 34.
The highest unemployment figures persisted in the Presov region (more than 41,000 people), the Kosice region (almost 32,000 people) and the Banska Bystrica region (23,000 people).
A negative trend of y-o-y growth in unemployment was observed in five out of eight regions in Slovakia, rising the most in the Banska Bystrica region (up 5 percent, or 1,500 people), followed by the Nitra region (more than 500 people). Meanwhile, the Bratislava region saw a decline of 3.2 percent (nearly 500 people).
