FinMin: State Budget Deficit Comes in at €4.3 billion in August

Bratislava, 1 September (TASR) - The state budget saw a deficit of €4.304 billion at the end of August 2025, which was an improvement of €345.7 million, or 7.4 percent year-on-year (y-o-y), the Finance Ministry announced on Monday.
State-budget income grew by €1.902 billion, or 14.4 percent y-o-y in the eighth month of the year, while expenditure rose by €1.556 billion, or 8.7 percent.
"Tax revenue grew by €1.536 billion (13.1 percent) y-o-y in August. Of this, the highest proportion as usual came from value-added tax, bringing in €681.6 million more than the year before. The amount of corporate tax collected rose by €226.1 million, that of withholding tax by €19.8 million, while the amount of excise taxes garnered grew by €43.7 million," said the Finance Ministry.
Despite an increase in transfers to local government of €80.7 million, the Finance Ministry also reported a positive development in income tax revenues, which went up by €314.1 million. Income from the special levy from businesses operating in regulated branches increased by €51.4 million y-o-y. The new financial transaction tax brought €168 million into state coffers in August.
"Positive developments were posted in revenues from the EU budget, which went up by €367.6 million, or 73.1 percent y-o-y," stated the ministry.
The cost of state-debt servicing grew by €307.8 million (38.7 percent) in August.
State budget expenditures related to drawing EU funds declined by €870 million (-44.6 percent). Meanwhile, expenditures related to drawing money from the Recovery and Resilience Plan rose by €651.9 million euros (+267.9 percent).
