Bratislava, 24 August (TASR) – The coalition's Slovak National Party (SNS) has proposed that only citizens of the Slovak Republic be eligible to serve in municipal police forces.
The party seeks to introduce this change through an amendment to the Act on Municipal Police, which it has submitted to Parliament.
SNS justifies the proposal as a measure to bolster public safety and increase public trust in local police forces.
„The safety of our towns and villages must be in the hands of Slovaks. It is natural that those who wear the uniform of the municipal police should be citizens of the Slovak Republic. This is about trust, stability, and fairness towards our people. This proposal sends a clear message that SNS always stands on the side of Slovakia and its citizens," said the party’s leader Andrej Danko.
SNS believes that the adoption of the amendment will enhance public security and reinforce trust in municipal police.
„This step is part of SNS's long-term efforts to protect Slovak citizens, preserve the sovereignty of the state, and promote stability and order in society," the party added.
The proposed amendment would come into effect on 1 January 2026.
