Brussels, 22 August (TASR) - Major General Slavomir Vercimak has been formally installed as a representative of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) during a session of the NATO Military Committee, thereby becoming the highest-ranking Slovak officer in NATO military structures, TASR reported on Thursday (21 August) based on a statement from the Slovak Armed Forces.
During his three-year term, Vercimak will represent SACEUR at all political and military meetings at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, the Slovak Armed Forces announced.
"Appointing a Slovak general to this key post is a sign of the high level of trust that our Allies have in the Slovak Armed Forces," reads the statement, adding that this trust has been built up through the work of all Slovak officers and non-commissioned officers assigned to staff positions within NATO, including the highest-ranking Slovak generals to date who have served at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and Joint Force Command Brunssum.
Installed in his new post by Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chief of the NATO Military Committee, during the session in Brussels, Vercimak has until recently served as Deputy Chief-of-General-Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces. He was promoted to the rank of major general by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini in December of last year.
