Bratislava, 19 August (TASR) – The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) welcomes the continuation of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, which took place in Washington on Monday, 18 August. The party expressed satisfaction that the talks are ongoing with the most important partner – Ukraine. In addition, KDH praised the friendly tone of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the party's press department told TASR on Tuesday. The party also sees the renewed involvement of European leaders as beneficial. "We can only hope that Russia isn't merely trying to buy time to continue the war and seize more Ukrainian territory. This should become clearer during the upcoming meeting announced by the US president, in the format of Trump, Zelensky and Putin in two weeks," stated KDH. The party also said that there is great hope in the fact that the entire democratic world is jointly seeking ways to provide security guarantees that would make any future peace solution lasting and deter an aggressor. At the same time, KDH stated that while Finland – a country with a population similar in size to Slovakia – was represented in Washington in person by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) is peddling conspiracy theories at home. On Monday, 18 August, US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders. On Friday, 15 August, Trump had also met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. All the meetings were focused on efforts to end the war in Ukraine, with a potential three-way summit between Zelensky, Putin and Trump still under discussion. mf/df
