NCZI: Number of Hospital Admissions in Slovakia Rose Again Year-on-Year

Bratislava, 17 August (TASR) - The number of hospital admissions in Slovakia rose again year-on-year in 2024; while in 2023 there were 195.3 per 1,000 inhabitants, last year the figure stood at 198.5, according to data published by the National Health Information Centre (NCZI). The highest numbers of hospital admissions last year were caused by circulatory system diseases, tumours and digestive diseases. A total of 1,076,045 hospital admissions were recorded in 2024. "This number includes admission into hospital of sick people, mothers and newborns, along with healthy people who accompanied a sick person during their hospital stay," stated NCZI. Patients spent an average of 6.2 days in hospital beds. "Mental and behavioural disorders took the longest time to treat (28.0 days on average), and diseases of the eye and ophthalmic adnexa the shortest (3.3 days on average)," added NCZI. The highest number of hospital admissions was seen in Kosice region (16.5 percent), followed by Bratislava (16.2 percent) and Zilina regions (15.1 percent). The lowest number was recorded by facilities in Trnava region (7 percent). More than a third of the people admitted into hospital for treatment were aged between 55-74 years (34.3 percent). A total of 28,865 people died in hospital last year, with the highest number of them being admitted into hospital due to circulatory system diseases (7,872). am/df/ko
