Bratislava, 15 August (TASR) - The opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) welcomes any meaningful effort aimed at bringing an end to Russia's unprovoked bloody aggression against Ukraine and also supports peace based on truth instead of conspiracy theories, TASR reported on Friday on the basis of a statement from the party's communications department regarding the Friday's meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
"Today, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) once again could not resist the temptation to speculate and echo the narratives of Russian propaganda, reiterating that 'someone' benefits from the war and that 'someone' is taking advantage of Ukraine to weaken Russia," KDH stated.
The opposition party stands on the side of facts and the victims of aggression, not on the side of the aggressor and its targeted conspiracies, and is wishing for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine more than anything else.
"Lasting peace must be safeguarded by sufficient security guarantees to prevent Russia's aggression from occurring again, be it in Ukraine or elsewhere," according to the Christian Democrats.
They are hoping for a positive shift during the meeting in Alaska. However, the negotiations about Ukraine must not take place without Ukrainian representatives.
"Therefore, KDH welcomes the announced continuation of talks with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in attendance," noted KDH, adding that only Ukraine can choose its own future and decide on its territory.
It is in Slovakia's interest to remain a reliable partner, one that is seeking peace through truth and cooperation, instead of propaganda and conspiracy theories, KDH concludes.
