Bratislava, 14 August (TASR) – At Thursday's meeting of the coalition council the Slovak National Party (SNS) proposed reducing the number of self-governing regions from eight to four, SNS spokesperson Zuzana Skopcova announced on the same day.
The proposed model would follow Slovakia’s historical division and create four regions: Bratislava, West, Central, and East.
According to the party, the reform would generate savings of over €500 million by reducing the number of offices and eliminating redundancy. It would also enable more efficient governance by consolidating powers and shifting part of the administration to district offices in regional capitals. This would, according to SNS, bring services closer to the people and simplify administration.
„With this step, SNS reaffirms its commitment to responsible state budget management, effective public administration, and a return to a proven historical model that is naturally familiar to the people," said the spokesperson.
She noted that SNS representatives at the coalition council meeting included party chair Andrej Danko, SNS vice-chair Jan Krisanda, and Environment Minister Tomas Taraba.
„The meeting was held in a constructive climate and led to several expert proposals. The Slovak National Party presented a key initiative delivered by SNS vice-chair Jan Krisanda – a proposal to reduce the number of higher territorial units from eight to four," Skopcova concluded.
