Sered, 4 August (TASR) - The Holocaust Museum in Sered (Trnava region) will pay honour to the victims of the Roma genocide on Monday evening with a commemorative concert performed by pianist Milos Bihary and an exhibition called 'The Persecution of Roma during the Holocaust', museum head Martin Korcok has told TASR. The museum is organising a commemorative event in cooperation with the Association for Culture, Education and Communication (ACEC), which has been engaged in the field of education, cultural diversity and active citizenship for 26 years. "ACEC is also the initiator of the Roma Spirit award, which annually highlights positive examples of approaches to the Roma community and supports a change in the perception of Roma in society," explained Korcok. Speeches by several invited guests will form part of the programme. The event will follow the recent Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, which commemorates the events that took place on the night from August 2 to 3, 1944, when nearly 3,000 Roma were murdered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp. It is estimated that some 0.5 million European Roma and Sinti died during WWII. The total number of Roma victims of the Holocaust in Slovakia is estimated at approximately 1,000. ko/df
