President: Matica Slovenska Plays Key Role in Protecting Our National Identity

Bratislava, 4 August (TASR) - National heritage institution Matica Slovenska has been playing a key role in protecting our national identity for many years, President Peter Pellegrini has posted on a social network to mark the anniversary of the institution's founding. The principles on which Matica Slovenska was founded show that the path to the economic and social prosperity of a nation leads through culture, education and morality, stated Pellegrini. "Let's remember that the cohesion of the nation, its ability to unite and work for the common good are values that move us forward, and therefore must accompany us today as well. Matica Slovenska covers a huge piece of our history even at present, primarily thanks to the work of those who participate in spreading its message," stated the president. The head of state praised the fact that that during his working trips he's met people who want to continue the given mission. "I express my full support for their efforts," he added. Matica Slovenska was founded in Turciansky Svaty Martin on August 4, 1863. Its founding was the culmination of efforts of generations of Slovaks to establish a nationwide association that would unite Slovaks across social and religious borders. This significant historical event is commemorated every year on August 4, the Memorial Day of Matica Slovenska. A respective law was adopted by MPs of the Slovak Parliament in October 1993. ko/df
