Electric Car Numbers in Slovakia Continue to Rise, Could Hit 20,000 by Year-end

Bratislava, 3 August (TASR) – The number of electric cars on Slovak roads continues to grow steadily, with 18,500 electric vehicles registered in the first half of 2025, according to the Slovak Association for Electromobility (SEVA). The market share of battery-powered vehicles in new car sales has remained above 3 percent throughout this year and surpassed 5 percent in June — a threshold many experts see as significant for accelerating the adoption of electromobility, said Zuzana Fecova, spokesperson for CSOB. A strong contender that could disrupt the local market is the Chinese brand BYD. While the number of electric cars increased by 53 percent year-on-year in 2024 compared to 2023, more than 3,000 new electric cars were registered in just the first six months of 2025. If this trend continues through the second half of the year, 2025 could become the strongest year yet for electric car growth and sales in Slovakia. „We are seeing this trend also at CSOB Leasing. While the share of financed personal and commercial vehicles dropped by 10 percent in the first half of the year, the battery vehicle category (electric cars) recorded a year-on-year increase of up to 50 percent,” said Petra Fenclova of CSOB Leasing. Statistics from CSOB Leasing show that most users of battery electric vehicles are employees of large companies. Corporate strategies increasingly focus on reducing emissions and operational costs. More environmentally friendly transport options are proving attractive to logistics firms, couriers and taxi services. Another growing group of users are city residents who drive short distances. Fecova added that SEVA expects approximately 20,000 battery electric cars to be on Slovak roads by the end of this year. A strong market player that could shift dynamics is the Chinese brand BYD. mf
