Bratislava, 29 July (TASR) – The construction of the new seat of the US Embassy in Slovakia could commence in April 2028 and is expected to last 28 to 60 months, the US Embassy in Slovakia informed TASR on Tuesday. The embassy is currently located on Hviezdoslav Square in Bratislava, and its security zone has been sealed off with a fence for many years. Several years ago, the USA bought a building on the corner of Dostojevsky rad and Olejkarska Streets in Bratislava. This locality close to Bratislava city centre has been mentioned over the past couple of years as a possible site to which the US Embassy might move from Hviezdoslav Square. The US Embassy in Slovakia confirmed its plans to build up the lot bought in this location and is not currently considering any other site. Asked whether the project would involve an adjacent building currently used by Bratislava Public City Transport Company (DPB), the embassy informed that this issue is being discussed. In June, as approved by the Bratislava City Council, the lease of the lot used as the security zone for the embassy on Hviezdoslav Square was extended until the end of July of 2035, meaning another 10 years. The annual rent remains the same, at €481,070. The US Embassy has been renting the lots on Hviezdoslav Square and Paulinyho Street since 2005. Following the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001, the embassy undertook security measures by building a fence around the security zone in 2002. The debate about removing the fence has been ongoing since 2016, with city officials seeing the relocation of the embassy as the only solution. jrg/mcs/ko
