Bratislava, 26 July (TASR) - Slovakia saw a 7.4-percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions last year when compared to 2023, with total emissions reaching 33,419 gigagrams of carbon dioxide, the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) has reported in reference to the preliminary balance of emissions for 2024.
"After accounting for captures from forests and the countryside, net emissions stood at 27,961 gigagrams of carbon dioxide equivalent, down by just 1.2 percent year-on-year. However, this figure also shows a reduction in captures between 2023 and 2024," stated the experts.
According to SHMU, the energy and industrial sectors contributed to the overall decrease in emissions. Reductions were also recorded in some industrial processes, such as aluminium production. "At the same time, the first estimates suggest that the drop in transport emissions in 2023 was not just a one-off blip but may signal the start of a positive trend," noted the experts, adding that agriculture remains the only sector in which emissions have continued to rise.
The final emissions data for 2024 will be announced in early 2026, added SHMU.
