SNS Doesn't Want Single Electoral District to Be Dropped from Constitution

Bratislava, 22 July (TASR) - The junior governing Slovak National Party (SNS) won't back the dropping of a single (nationwide) electoral district from the Slovak Constitution, as it views it as a step towards eliminating smaller political parties. SNS was reacting to House Chair Richard Rasi (Voice-SD) who wants the coalition to return to this issue. "The Slovak National Party finds the issue in question to be irrelevant, we aren't dealing with it, nor will we support it, as it's about eliminating smaller political parties," reads SNS's statement, provided to TASR by SNS spokesperson Zuzana Skopcova. The coalition Voice-SD party wanted the provision on a single electoral district to be dropped from the Constitution as part of an amendment. However, the proposal failed to win sufficient support in Parliament even from coalition MPs. Rasi hopes that agreement will eventually be achieved and that the sentence will be dropped from the Constitution. The provision that Slovakia forms a single electoral district for general elections was inserted into the Constitution under the previous government. Rasi stressed that dropping the provision would not bring about specific changes to the electoral system but would only open a debate on them. ko/df
