Slovak Hotels and Guest Houses Accommodated almost 536,000 Tourists in May

Bratislava, 19 July (TASR) - Tourist accommodation facilities in Slovakia were visited by almost 536,000 guests in May, up by 8 percent year-on-year (y-o-y), the Statistics Office reported earlier this week. However, the number of people staying in tourist accommodation facilities was still 3 percent below the record set in the pre-pandemic month of May 2019. Guests spent spent 1.3 million nights in hotels and guest houses in Slovakia, with the average length of stay equalling 2.5 nights in May. Domestic clientele made up almost two thirds of all visitors, with their number going up by 11 percent to 337,000 in May. The figure even exceeded the most successful pre-pandemic May by almost 3 percent. The number of foreign visitors went up by 5 percent y-o-y to 198,000. However, this figure was still 12 percent below the record set in May 2019. Seven out of eight Slovak regions reported growth in the number of visitors in May, with increases ranging from 4.5 percent in Kosice region to 13.7 percent in Banska Bystrica region. Trencin region was a only one to post a drop - of almost 1 percent from last year. The highest number of tourists visited Bratislava region (138,000), followed by Zilina region (106,000) and Presov region (86,000). These three regions together accounted for more than 61 percent of the total visitor numbers in Slovakia. Zilina and Presov regions were popular mainly among domestic visitors, while foreign tourists preferred Bratislava region. ko/df
