Komarno, 17 July (TASR) - Residents of towns and villages in the district of Komarno (Nitra region) protested for safer transport on Thursday morning. People crossed pedestrian crossings on the main roads passing through Komarno, Hadovce, Kamenicna, Kolarovo, Dedina Mladeze (Youth Village), Neded, Vlcany and Ziharec, thereby blocking freight traffic and slowing down the passage of lorries. The aim of the protest was to draw attention to the poor condition of roads and traffic problems in the region. The mayors of 30 towns and villages in south-western Slovakia issued a joint statement on the critical condition of road infrastructure. In it, they expressed serious concerns over the long-term unaddressed situation, which directly threatens the safety of local people. They pointed to the increasing number of traffic accidents and the persistent neglect of road maintenance by state authorities. In their statement, the mayors of the affected towns and villages defined the main short-term and long-term measures that need to be taken. These include widening second- and third-category roads which in sections are dangerously narrow, reconstructing bridges and other critical infrastructure elements, cleaning ditches, cutting down trees and invasive plants that interfere with the road surface, intensifying speed checks and weighing vehicles. They also call for a change in legislation that would allow municipalities to measure speeds and levy fines. ko/df
