PS: Potential Mass Layoffs at ZSR Consequence of Years of Neglect

Bratislava, 11 July (TASR) - The potential mass layoffs at the state-run rail infrastructure operator (ZSR) are a consequence of years of neglect, stated transport expert from the opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party Martin Pekar, noting that the announced mass layoffs could affect hundreds of employees. According to Pekar, the reforms are necessary, but they come too late. He said the situation is a proof that the crisis in the country has reached its peak. „Slovakia has damaged railways, a shortage of train drivers, a lack of digitisation and neglected junctions. Instead of actual investment and reform of the whole sector, the government has repeatedly handed out functions to its own people and prioritised party interests over professional solutions. The railways in Slovakia aren't collapsing on their own, they're collapsing because of political decisions and indifference," Pekar said. ZSR confirmed on Friday that it's seriously considering the possibility of launching a mass layoff process. „At the moment, we can't confirm the scope or specify the exact numbers or timetable, as we first have to fulfil our obligations from the Labour Code as well as the collective agreement. We therefore ask for your patience,“ said ZSR spokeswoman Petra Lanikova. lin
