Bratislava, 10 July (TASR) - Elchin Gasimov has become Slovakia's new ambassador to Azerbaijan, TASR was told by the Foreign Affairs Ministry's communications department on Thursday. Gasimov previously served as deputy ambassador at the Slovak Embassy in Baku. "Slovakia's bilateral cooperation with Azerbaijan was significantly strengthened last year and we upgraded our relations to a strategic partnership. We thus confirmed our interest in continuing a prospective dialogue in several areas," said chief Slovak diplomat Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD). Slovakia wants to make use of the potential especially in the field of trade, namely in the import of oil and natural gas, or in the defence industry. Both countries can support each other in economic growth, according to the ministry. The turnover of mutual trade between Slovakia and Azerbaijan reached approximately €210 million in 2024. Under the leadership of the new ambassador, the Slovak Embassy in Baku intends to focus on supporting Slovak companies in establishing contacts and opening opportunities in the country. The ambassador sees Azerbaijan as a prospective business partner for Slovakia in the energy and defence industries, and in information and transportation technologies. am
