Bratislava, 8 July (TASR) - Several areas of Slovakia are facing the dangers caused by heavy rainfall, with the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) issuing a third-level warning for parts of northern Slovakia - the districts of Cadca, Namestovo, Tvrdosin, and Poprad - where rainfall could exceed 130 millimetres, TASR has learnt from SHMU's website.
"This amount of precipitation poses a general threat to human activity. The expected volume and intensity of the rainfall are extremely high for this time of year and region and are likely to cause major damage and endanger human lives," the institute warned.
Further regions are also at risk of intense rainfall. A second-level warning is in effect for several districts in Zilina region, as well as for the districts of Kezmarok, Povazska Bystrica, and Puchov. A first-level warning has been issued for various districts in Trencin region and for Brezno, Banska Bystrica, Skalica, Senica, Martin, Ruzomberok, Turcianske Teplice, Levoca, Sabinov and Stara Lubovna.
Flood alerts have also been declared for multiple locations in northern, western and central Slovakia due to prolonged rainfall. A second-level flood warning is currently in place for the districts of Cadca, Namestovo, Tvrdosin, Prievidza and Poprad.
