Bratislava, 8 July (TASR) – The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is examining two complaints related to the detention conditions, alleged ill-treatment and circumstances surrounding the death of former Slovak police chief (2018-20) Milan Lucansky. The complaints were filed by his son, Adam Lucansky, who serves as an MP and provided the statement to TASR on Tuesday. The Slovak government was reportedly informed about the complaints on 25 June. "After repeatedly pointing out violations of my father's rights with respect to the conditions of his detention, including injuries he suffered while in custody and his subsequent death, I see the ECHR's communication of my complaints to the government as a significant step in an international review of how Slovakia has met its human rights obligations," stated Adam Lucansky. Milan Lucansky died on 30 December 2020, after attempting suicide on December 29 while in custody at a Presov detention facility where he was being held before a trial for corruption-related charges. The Prosecutor-General's Office announced in July of last year that its investigation had found no evidence of unlawful, intentional or negligent conduct by members of the Prison and Judicial Guard Corps in connection with Lucansky's death. mf/df
