Bratislava, 6 July (TASR) - Political parties will receive nearly €14.3 million this year for the 2023 general election results, TASR has learnt from the Finance Ministry.
In total, the contribution is €92.87 million.
The contribution is shared by nine parties that achieved at least 3 percent of the votes in the 2023 election and will be paid out gradually each year during the four-year parliamentary term (2023-2027).
The winner of the election, Smer-SD, will receive a total of almost €3.6 million, the Progressive Slovakia (PS) party will receive more than €2.8 million, Voice-SD will get €2.4 million, the 'Slovakia-For the People-KU' party [former OLANO] will receive €1.5 million and Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) will get €1.1 million. The Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party will receive €1.04 million and Slovak National Party (SNS) over €935,000.
Parties that didn't make it into Parliament but gained more than 3 percent of the votes will also receive funding, namely the 'Republic' party (almost €460,000) and the Hungarian Alliance (over €424,000).
The Interior Ministry recently proposed an amendment according to which, only parties that reached at least 5 percent in the general election would qualify to receive the contribution from the state budget. The ministry stated that those parties that don't reach 5 percent would be motivated to seek support more actively.
Transparency International Slovakia (TIS) warned that such a change could make the election campaign less transparent and fair, increasing the pressure for dubious financing.
