Vysoke Tatry, 5 July (TASR) - Tatra National Part Administration (TANAP), along with Polish Tatra National Park and volunteers recorded a decrease of more than 22 percent in chamois compared to last year, TASR has learnt from the TANAP's website. The census took place in mid-June on both the Slovak and Polish sides of the Tatra Mountains. A total of 740 individuals were counted, with 491 on the Slovak and 249 on the Polish side of the mountain. It confirmed a decrease compared to autumn 2024, when 949 individuals were counted. The difference, 209 individuals, corresponds to a decline of more than 22 percent. Out of the total count, 94 were identified as young, 218 as female chamois, and 66 as males, while the sex and age of 181 individuals could not be determined with certainty, according to TANAP. Since the spring count takes place when chamois seek shady spots and are less active, the results may be partially skewed, TANAP noted. Additionally, the terrain's nature and adverse weather conditions can make observation difficult, so the monitoring allows for an acceptable margin of error of around 10 to 12 percent. lin/mcs
