Bratislava, 30 June (TASR) - Pavol Pavlis is due to become the new Slovak ambassador to Hungary, Foreign Ministry's communications department told TASR on Monday, adding that an important agenda of Slovakia's representative office in Budapest remains the care of Slovak compatriots in Hungary and the provision of quality consular services to Slovak nationals. Pavlis previously served as economy minister, MP and head of the Slovak Office for Standardisation, Metrology and Testing. "Hungary is an important neighbour for Slovakia and at the same time an important political and economic partner not only on a bilateral level, but also within the European Union, the North Atlantic Alliance, the Visegrad Group (V4: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) and the Central 5 countries (C5: Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia). Our partnership is based on practical cooperation and the promotion of peaceful values," said Slovak chief diplomat Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD), adding that this year the countries are commemorating the 30th anniversary of the signing of the basic Treaty of Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation between Slovakia and Hungary. Pavlis pointed out that Hungary is the fourth most important trading partner of Slovakia and the third largest investor in the country. According to him, the turnover of mutual trade exchange has been growing for a long time, reaching €13.5 billion in 2024. Energy is a strategic area of economic cooperation. am/mcs
