Bratislava, June 30 (TASR) – The government is preparing the largest fiscal consolidation in the country’s history, opposition's MP Julius Jakab (Slovakia-For the People-KU alliance) declared at a press conference on Sunday. Jakab pointed to recent statements by government officials suggesting that consolidation measures should reach as much as three billion euros. „It is evident that Slovakia and its economy are collapsing. People are no longer willing to pay all the taxes this government has imposed on them — they’re avoiding them. That’s why this government is going to carry out the largest consolidation ever seen, and it will impact ordinary people,” he said. Jakab also criticized the government’s past economic decisions, claiming it has not saved a single euro and continues to drive the country into historic levels of debt. In addition, he objected to the amount of money being allocated to celebrate 9th-century Saints Cyril and Methodius, calling it a misuse of public funds. mf
