Bratislava, 24 June (TASR) - The communist regime wasn't an alternative to democracy, but its negation: it destroyed destinies, divided families, and suppressed consciences and the truth, House Chair Richard Rasi (Voice-SD) said on the occasion of Remembrance Day for Victims of Communism on Tuesday, calling for the victims' legacy to never be forgotten.
"On the Remembrance Day for Victims of Communism, we have an important duty to emphasise the fundamental pillars on which our current statehood and society stand. The memory of the unjust sacrifice of dozens of thousands of people teaches us about the immense value of freedom, the rule of law and democratic institutions. The protection of these principles is the most important legacy that the past has left to us and at the same time a key commitment for the current and future leadership of the state, Rasi has posted on a social network.
Remembrance Day for Victims of Communism has been observed in Slovakia since 2024. It is associated with the imprisoned and tortured Silvester Krcmery, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison for treason by the Military Court in Trencin in 1954. In his final speech at the trial on June 24, 1954, Krcmery said the words that have become legendary: "You have the power in your hands, but we have the truth!" He managed to get the validity of the conviction annulled after the fall of the communist regime.
