Bratislava, 21 June (TASR) - The Council of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) has supported the constitutional changes in a resolution, KDH leader Milan Majersky told journalists following the KDH Council meeting in Bratislava on Saturday, calling on his party MPs to back the draft in its third reading.
According to Majersky, the resolution was preceded by a strong debate and exchange of opinions.
"We've adopted a strong resolution in which the KDH Council approves the draft amendment to the Constitution, which took over essential parts from the original draft amendment sponsored by KDH. In the second part of the resolution, the KDH Council is asking all MPs elected for KDH to back the draft amendment to the Constitution in its third reading, as it promotes the party's value agenda and is in the best interest of Slovakia and the European Union," stated Majersky.
"It will be up to all those who care about the Constitution to ensure that the governing majority supplies 79 votes and convinces also MP Jan Ferencak," said Majersky, admitting that KDH also has its share in the inability to secure the necessary number of votes.
MP and KDH vice-chair Marian Caucik stated that they adopted the resolution, as the proposed constitutional changes stirred "great passion" and misunderstanding. "The proposed constitutional amendment is based on conservative and value-based priorities that KDH has been promoting in its programme for 35 years," he noted.
At the same time, Caucik stressed that the policy pursued by Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) contradicts to the values and programme promoted by KDH. Therefore, he refused to link the vote on the constitutional changes with support for the government or potential post-election cooperation with the parties of the currently governing coalition.
