Luxembourg, 20 June (TASR-correspondent) - Slovakia supports the EU's intentions to invest more in self-sufficiency in critical medicines, Slovak Health Minister Kamil Sasko (Voice-SD) stated following the EU Health Council meeting in Luxembourg on Friday.
Sasko pointed out that the Council of Ministers dealt with many issues, considering the law on critical medicines and the preparation of the pharmaceutical legislative package to be particularly important.
The EU's Critical Medicines Act, he said, should also be seen in the context of similar policies around the world, for example, in comparison with the US law on medicines.
"The aim is to ensure that in critical situations there are enough medicines for patients and users in the EU," said Sasko, stressing that the EU as a whole needs to gain much more autonomy, ideally even self-sufficiency in this sector, meaning more investment in European production of medicines and ensuring mechanisms to secure the availability of medicines not only during crises, such as the coronavirus pandemic, but also in the event of wars, such as the one in Ukraine.
