Bratislava, 16 June (TASR) - MP Jan Ferencak (Voice-SD), who chairs the parliamentary committee for European affairs, has proposed that votes from 100 MPs instead of the current 90 should be needed to amend the Slovak Constitution.
Ferencak wants to discuss his proposal with MPs, but he hasn't yet said whether he'll present it in the plenum. He wants to see the Constitution receive greater protection.
For now, Ferencak is submiting his proposal for discussion. "If this motion finds support among MPs and parties, I know I can also submit it as an amendment at today's meeting," he told a press conference on Monday. He proposes that 100 votes, i.e. the consent of at least a two-thirds majority of all MPs, should be needed to pass constitutional amendments and constitutional laws. "In this way, we'll increase the pressure to seek social consensus, and it will only be possible to pass constitutional changes if they are supported by a wider range of political forces, including the opposition," he added.
