Slovak Wines Win Trophies at Danube Wine Challenge

Bela, June 14 (TASR) - A Riesling vintage 2022 from a winery called Terra Wylak in Jasova (the South Slovak wine region) and a Cabernet Franc rosé 2024 from a winery called Vinidi near the village of Bab (the Small Carpathian wine region) became winners of the 11th annual international Danube Wine Challenge wine competition, wine expert and director of the competition Edita Durcova told TASR, adding that they won first prizes in a competition involving 740 wine samples from 12 countries.
Half of the competing wines came from Slovakia, about 120 were from Spain, while others originated in the Czech Republic, Australia and Chile. The winner of the Prix Vinofed in the red wine category was a Spanish Antaño Crianza 2019 from Rioja region. In the sparkling wine category the trophy went to the Czech Republic for the Znovin sparkling wine Classic brut Nature.
The winners were selected by a professional tasting jury of 50 wine experts from countries across Europe as well as from Chile, Africa and Australia. The jury evaluated an record number of wines this year.
The Danube Wine Challenge is one of the 15 most important wine competitions in the world. It is the only one held in Slovakia that is a member of the World Federation of Major International Wine and Spirits Competitions (Vinofed). The competition is held annually at Chateau Bela in the south of Slovakia.
