Bratislava, 13 June (TASR) - MPs for the junior governing Slovak National Party (SNS) will vote for the government's draft amendment to the Slovak Constitution, but they won't support a proposal by Voice-SD stating that the provision on a single (nationwide) electoral district for general elections should be dropped from the Constitution, SNS leader Andrej Danko told a news conference on Friday.
At the same time, Danko said that an agreement on value issues in the constitutional amendment had been reached with part of the opposition, which "looks like a compromise."
"It was at this very moment that I signed a change that appears to be a compromise between the coalition and part of the opposition in which we would find a compromise on value issues so that we could achieve the necessary quorum to amend the Constitution," said Danko, specifying that an agreement on the change has been reached with the Christian Democrats (KDH). He reiterated that SNS would vote in favour of the issues agreed upon within the coalition.
Parliament should vote on the amendment to the Constitution on Monday (16 June). MPs for KDH, plus MPs Richard Vasecka and Anna Zaborska (both 'Slovakia', For the People, the Christian Union/KU) have announced that they will back the amendment if their conditions are met. The votes of 90 MPs are needed to amend the Constitution.
