Bratislava, June 12 (TASR) - Civil aviation might return to Sliac Airport (Banska Bystrica region), as the government on Thursday approved a proposal to this effect sponsored by Tourism Minister Rudolf Huliak (Independent). Huliak should launch negotiations on resuming civil aviation at Sliac with the Defence and Transport Ministries and submit information on the result of the negotiations to the government by February 2026. The ministry believes that the plan will contribute towards developing tourism in the region. "The resumption of civil aviation at Sliac is of strategic importance in the long term not only for the town of Sliac and its surroundings, but for the whole of Slovakia," stated the ministry, adding that the accessibility of transport is one of the key elements that influence foreign clients when deciding whether to visit Sliac spa with its high concentration of natural and healing springs. Civilian flights at Sliac Airport were halted in late 2020 due to the need to reconstruct the military part of the facility. The work should be completed in two years. ko/df
