Jakab: Coalition Looking for Excuses to Avoid Changing Transaction Tax

Bratislava, 10 June (TASR) - The tax on financial transactions is a means of "fleecing" people so that the government doesn't have to save on itself, and the efforts of the coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) to partially scrap it are also insincere, MPs for the opposition 'Slovakia' party stated on Tuesday in response to the fact that changes to the transaction tax weren't discussed at an extraordinary parliamentary session on Tuesday initiated by the opposition. The transaction tax was approved last year by all MPs of the governing coalition, including legislators of the SNS caucus, who now want to partially scrap it, pointed out member of the House finance committee Julius Jakab ('Slovakia' party). "The coalition has found a new ploy to fleece sole traders and small entrepreneurs for months to come," said Jakab following the unsuccessful special House session, adding that the coalition is looking for new excuses to keep stealing from people. "The transaction tax is in place to allow the government to fleece the public instead of saving on itself," he added. The special parliamentary session was initiated by the opposition. Its goal was to approve the scrapping of the transaction tax for tradesmen and small firms, proposed by SNS, as soon as possible. However, the coalition had already previously indicated its intention to approve the changes to the transaction tax, which have already made it to its second reading, no earlier than at the next regular House session in September. am/df
