Bratislava, 6 June (TASR) - Retail sales in Slovakia decreased by 0.4 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) in April, the Statistics Office reported on Friday, adding that this was the third drop in a row. Seasonally adjusted, retail revenues grew by 1.5 percent month-on-month in April. As many as seven of the nine retail segments saw revenues decline in fixed prices when compared to April 2024. The office ascribed the drop mainly to a 4-percent drop in the revenues of kiosks, e-shops and markets, etc. (entities without outlets). The second most significant impact on the sector's overall result was 7.4-percent decrease in revenues of hobby markets and outlets selling furniture and electronics (specialised household goods). The downward trend in the sector also resulted from a two-digit fall in revenues of outlets selling sports accessories, books and toys (specialised goods for culture and recreation), going down by 23.7 percent, as well as specialised outlets selling food, beverages and tobacco, posting a drop of 10.9 percent. Meanwhile, the decline in revenues was significantly dampened by the positive results of hypermarkets and supermarkets (non-specialized outlets). Their April revenues were 7.9 percent higher than a year ago. As it is the most significant component, accounting for 40 percent of the industry's total revenues, this growth has mitigated most of the negative declines. In the first four months of 2025, retail revenues went down by 1.2 percent y-o-y, with drops recorded by six of the nine retail segments. ko
