Bratislava 4 June (TASR) - Opposition party Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) on Wednesday submitted a proposal to Parliament to abolish the transaction tax in its entirety, SaS MP Marian Viskupic has stated, adding that this tax should never have been introduced in the first place and that the only correct solution is to get rid of it altogether.
"The six-month deadline for submitting a proposal to scrap the transaction tax has passed today, so I would like to inform you that we have submitted to Parliament a bill that will abolish the whole transaction tax, without compensation and for everyone: for tradesmen, small firms, big firms, supranational companies, simply for everyone," said Viskupic.
However, even if the whole transaction tax is scrapped, it cannot be viewed as help for entrepreneurs, stressed Viskupic. "There's a need to realise that we were in a situation in which there was no transaction tax, but our economy, our firms were in a demanding situation anyway. So I would like to draw your attention to the fact that even the complete scrapping of the transaction tax still isn't [all that] the Slovak economy needs," stated the MP, adding that this might be the first step towards the Slovak economy starting to function at least somehow.
Parliament moved an amendment to the law on financial transaction tax, sponsored by the coalition Slovak National Party, (SNS) to its second reading on Tuesday (3 June). If definitively approved by Parliament, tradesmen and small firms with turnovers not exceeding €100,000 should no longer have to pay this tax as of October. The opposition backed the draft amendment as well, but it insists that the transaction tax should be totally scrapped.
